If you want to look for barware in Athens, head to barequip.gr, which is both the name of the boutique and the address of its online shop.
The shop is small but well equipped. You’ll find a decent selection of shakers, bar spoons, mixing glasses, drinking glasses and jiggers. They also have bartending bags, including the one I bought online from Mavenhal! There are also a few books in English and in Greek of course.
The most interesting part of the shop is the ingredients section: the (nearly) complete range of bitters by Jerry Thomas, Fee Brothers & co, quite the selection of syrups by Monin and another producer, different ranges of fruit purées and, above all, a selection of eight different shrubs! It was the first time I saw some ready-made shrubs and I got really curious. The shop owner let me try one, the beetroot one, and it tasted delicious! The balance between the vinegar and the sugar was perfect and the beetroot taste was really natural. As I’ve been intending to try my hand at making my own beetroot shrub at home, I bought a bottle to serve as a reference. I also got a bottle of celery shrub and one of ginger shrub.
